From Italy to Seattle

Ricardo Pérez began building and repairing string instruments in 1987 under the guidance of Antonio Carriedo, completing his first violin in 1990. Later that year, he moved to Italy, where—following the advice of maestro Ernesto Vaia—he finished that instrument and continued building violins, violas, cellos, and double basses without interruption for more than 30 years.

In the early 1990s, Ricardo trained in Cremona with Master Luthier Loeiz Honoré and studied bow making under Giovanni Lucchi, Emilio Slaviero, and Fiorenza Manfredini. He later enrolled at the Parma Violin Making School, where he continued his studies with the renowned luthier Renato Scrollavezza. Professional musicians across Europe and Japan currently play instruments built during his time in Italy.

In 1995, Ricardo co-founded the Pérez & Raynaud workshop in Mexico with Ann Sylvie Raynaud, serving conservatories, orchestras, and professional musicians with instrument making, restoration, and conservation work. He has participated in international exhibitions and festivals, including Musicora (Paris) and Instrumenta (Mexico).

In 2014, Ricardo relocated to the Seattle area, opening his own workshop in Renton, Washington. He has worked with respected violin shops in the region and is currently Head Restorer at Applebaum Violin Shop. To date, he has built over 120 instruments and restored numerous historically and artistically significant pieces, applying the highest standards developed through decades of professional practice.
